The Smart Way To Strike Gold With Metal Detectors
By Steve J Carter
If you’ve lived near a beach, you’ve probably been enchanted by the idea of buried pirate’s treasure, of gold coins and mouldy chests filled to bursting with pearls and rubies. You probably even spent some time searching. More than likely, the most you ever found were a couple of quarters and maybe some random junk jewellery, but you probably remember the excitement when your detector started beeping frantically. While you may not be able to get rich searching for pirate’s gold, there may be at least one other way to cash in on your metal detector.
Metal detectors are fun toys, which you can probably attest to if you used one, but perhaps a little bit disappointing in their actuality. People often forget that metal detectors can only sense metals that are buried a foot or less in the ground, usually in a strata that has been recently turned for one reason or another. Whether they know this or not, Read more

Treasure Hunting with the Troy Metal Detector

Treasure Hunting with the Troy Metal Detector
By Low Jeremy
People who want to look for buried coins or jewelry should have a dependable metal detector at all times. This will make it easy to discover something when the alarm starts sounding and all the individual has to do after that is dig.
There will be times that the user will find junk while other times, something interesting. Regardless of whatever, at least the person can say that the machine that was purchased works.
One company that has been in the business of metal detection is Troy. Through the years, the firm has developed different models from the Shadow X2 to the X5 that can be used by professionals and amateurs.
The Shadow X2 is the most basic model. It is hand held and comes with an extended waterproof coil at the bottom. This device is battery operated and has a settings box in the center allowing the person to adjust the sensitivity when going treasure hunting.
Unfortunately, this model is quite old and is no longer being produced. This is the reason that those who are really serious about looking for buried treasure can try the Shadow X3 that has more features than the basic model.
This is lighter than the previous model and unlike other brands, this thing is only powered by a single 9 volt alkaline battery. The individual can probably get one of these for $899 in the market.
If anything goes wrong, the company will be happy to fix it since each metal detector has a lifetime guarantee.
Professionals who only want to use the best equipment in the field can never go wrong with the Shadow X5. It looks like the other models but the control switch allows the individual to do other things such as target and discrimination modes enabling the user to start digging within a few inches of the object.
The price for this baby, $1099. A little more expensive that the other models but given the special functions of this machine, the treasure will surely find a lot of things buried underneath especially when this can be used in almost any terrain.
Selecting the right metal detector will take time given that there are many brands in the market. But if the customer wants the best, there is no need to do that especially when Troy metal detectors are available in different models and can be upgraded with other accessories such as a larger coil for the unit.

7 Considerations When Buying Your Metal Detector
By Eddy Lam
Metal detecting is gaining popularity as a hobby these days. You’ve seen scores of people using metal detectors on beaches and at parks. Your neighbour’s kid told you how he found a historic gold coin in the backyard using his metal detector and made a tidy sum selling it to the antique shop down the street. Your friend has just bought one of the sleekest looking metal detector and can’t wait to show it off. All sound good, but WAIT, before you jump onto the bandwagon, be sure you know how a metal detector work and how to get the ideal piece for yourself.
Although there are many brands available, hobby metal detectors all have common parts and components. Normally, Read more

Coins, Jewelry and Treasure – You Can Find Them With A Metal Detector
By Chris Ralph
Metal detecting is a comparatively new hobby. Sure there have been hobbyist type metals detectors for decades but new and superior detector technology has come out in recent years. The metal detector is an electronic device which can sense metallic objects buried in the ground. Finding a lost gold ring or old valuable coin can be really exciting, but even just picking up a few dollars of change at the local school can be loads of fun and a lot of good exercise. Once the operator is well practiced, it is possible to dig targets out of the ground with so little disturbance that the spot cannot be seen afterward. The biggest advantage of modern detectors is that most of the time they can actually differentiate trash from valuable coins and silver jewelry. Hobbyists are using their detectors to Read more

Metal Detectors
By A J Wilkinson
Several different kinds of metal detectors exist, I will explain how they work while trying not to get too technical. There are three major classes of metal detectors available.
The first type of metal detector is the PI, which stands for Pulse Induction. Pulse induction means that you are creating an electromagnetic pulse that exits the coil, bounces off a target, then returns to the coil giving a report on the target it hit.
Pulse induction detectors are usually more sensitive to smaller and deeper targets. The down side is they also pick up more trash targets and have a difficult time telling good targets apart from bad targets.
Another detector type is the VLF, which stands for Very Low Frequency. This kind of detector is versatile and commonly used. It uses phase demodulation to discriminate between types of metallic objects like iron and gold. It does a good job at telling the difference between good objects, like gold and treasure, and trash such as nails, bottle caps etc.
Yet another is the BFO, or Beat Frequency Oscillator. The beat frequency oscillator is a low cost circuit design. It has two coils, one at the end of the arm of the detector and one in the control box on the handle. These coils form a pair of tuned oscillators. The oscillators are tuned so that the difference in their frequencies is an exact multiple of each other. The presence of any metallic object will produce a change in either oscillator and thus produce an audible beat frequency harmonic tone.
Each of these technologies has trade-offs, usually between cost and their ability to sense small valuable objects. Newer advances are coming every day. Most of these are in the area of using special digital signal processing of the return signal. Every conductive object has a peculiar signature spectrum that tells a bit more about the object and can also be filtered out to separate junk (iron & aluminum) from Gold Treasure. As technologies advance the price for more capable equipment drops. This in turn opens new depths and more trashy areas to be hunted for treasure.
Please remember to hunt responsibly, avoid trespassing and fill your holes when you are finished. Enjoy hunting for buried treasure!

Metal Detectors for Kids
By Low Jeremy
A lot of kids grew up with the fascination of pirates and buried treasure. The child of course will never find an old treasure map to enjoy this sort of adventure. Parents however can offer some support by letting the kid have fun by hiding something in the house and looking for it.
Having a treasure hunt at home can be fun. The best way to enlarge the search area will be to do this also in the backyard and even getting a metal detector. Here are a few basic units that the person can choose from. Read more
