Metal detectors are interesting pieces of technology. They have a variety of uses and have become even more versatile throughout the years. Ever since the first metal detectors came out in the 19th century, scientists and engineers never stopped working on better and more efficient designs.

Nowadays, there are metal detectors that can pinpoint metals so accurately that they have become indispensable tools in fields like mineralogy, engineering, security and even in the military.

From the crude models of the 19th century, the modern detectors had its debut in the 1930s when Gerhard Fischer released and patented his very own metal detector. Fischer’s design used resonating coils to detect the presence of metal under the ground. These metal detectors proved to be an asset during World War II.

Metal detectors were used during the war to find land mines scattered across the paths of troops. They saved a number of soldiers back then. However, these metal detectors could have been more useful if they were not that heavy.

Early designs of metal detectors were not that convenient as compared today. These detectors require a great amount of “juice” to power up which means lugging behind heavy batteries.

The modern detectors basically are made up of coils and uses electromagnetic induction to detect the presence of metal. Aside from the portable metal detectors that we have grown accustomed to and use in hobbies and games like treasure hunting, there are some bigger models that are used mainly in security and related fields.

Other uses for metal detectors include detection of foreign objects in food. These pieces of equipment are of course very useful in the construction industry as well. You could easily detect steel reinforcing bars, pipes and wires that are buried in walls and floors with a detector.

Powerful metal detectors are also used to determine the location of mineral ores for the mining industry. In the field of archaeology, artifacts can be detected even if they are buried deep underneath sand or soil. During rescue missions, sometimes metal detectors also come in handy.

In places like airports, security uses walk in metal detectors to determine if people are carrying metallic objects like knives and guns which can cause potential dangers to passengers or commuters.

The standard coil detectors were the trend back then, but recent technologies have brought about new breeds of metal detectors. You can now see the Beat Balance and Coil Coupled Operation metal detectors which were made available to the public just a couple of years ago.

For many metal detecting for coins can be a very profitable hobby and hopefully the tips on finding coins that we provide below will help you to not only find more but also better coins as well.

1. Searching Previously Metal Detected Areas

Although these types of areas can prove very challenging and there may be finds few and far between there will always be something good left behind. Below are some tips for searching these types of sites.

Before you commence your hunt take a look in the area and come up with a plan for hunting it. Note areas that seem un-obvious to others as most people will often head for the easiest and obvious areas first. Head towards areas where there are bushes, shrubs or areas that are over grown as these are places that most people will avoid when they are out metal detecting. Also go to areas where you think that have seen less metal detecting traffic such as round by fence lines or side walk strips.

Also dig in areas even if you only get a whisper or hint of something being there. Many people when out searching for coins or any form of treasure will move away from those areas where the signal is not strong.

2. Finding Deep Coins

This is completely different from finding coins that are on the surface (within 1-5 inches of the surface) and will generally give a strong signal. However deep coins are to be found in the 5-10 inch range and the response you get when you sweep the coil over them will be different. Often these coins will not sound solid and repeatable and instead will offer a whisper or jumpy signal that will in a lot of cases sound similar to the signal for rubbish that is located with a metal detector.

The easiest way in order to train your ears so that they become accustomed to detecting deep coins is to dig deep. So any time you pick up a signal that is deep and iffy then dig.

Hopefully the tips on finding coins provided above will help you when you are metal detecting in the future.

So you finally decided to take the leap and buy metal detector, trust me you will not be disappointed in the excitement and the joy that it brings. Metal detecting is a hobby that many people take up and it really you get hooked. The sheer joy and excitement that metal detecting brings in finding a treasure is enough to make anybody addicted to metal detecting.

If you are new to metal detecting here are couple tips you should know before you get started out, these tips will make your metal detecting more profitable and more enjoyable. When you are new to metal detecting it sometimes can be difficult to find good information to help you get started, but in this article we will take a look at learning the local more about the metal detector, good places to metal detect, and planning your trip out before you start.

The first and foremost thing I would tell anybody to do before starting metal detecting is after you purchase a metal detector take it home and learn all of the controls and the maintenance for the metal detector. You will be so excited when you get the detector the first thing you want to do is take it out immediately and start looking for treasure, but to maximize your time is best to learn all of the options and everything the metal detector offers to you.

Finding places to metal detect is extremely easy and after getting a metal detector here are a couple of places you can start out with. Go into your backyard and just start metal detecting, this will give you a good feel for the equipment and you may find something in the process. If you live near any parks, this is a good place to go because typically a lot of people will go to the park. If you are close to an ocean beachcombing is really popular and can yield really good results.

If you are planning on taking a trip or spending a day metal detecting, always make sure that you plan the trip out to maximize your time and once you decide the location that you are going to metal detect on, contact the landowner and confirm that metal detecting is accepted. If you are prepared in the beginning you will be able to find more treasure.

When starting out in metal detecting the first inclination is to just grab the metal detector of the box and start running across the ground. After getting over the first wave of excitement you really need to start planning on how to use the metal detector, places to look, and maximizing your time. The information you just read it is a good starting point for you if you are just beginning in metal detecting.

Coin Hunting or ‘Coin Shooting’ as it’s often called, is not only very fun to do, but it can easily be very profitable. Finding just one gold piece or any rare coin can easily pay for the cost of the metal detector. When it comes to Coin Hunting or ‘Coin Shooting’, there are some places that I call ‘hot spots’, or the best places.

Riverbanks – Ponds – Lakes – Swimming Holes: These locations are true treasure hunting top spots. The Riverbank is a huge area that can provide a lifetime of detecting. River banks were used as ferry crossings, and some had covered bridges with toll stations. The local old timers may be able to tell you where the local fishing and old swimming spots were. Remember many of the old fishing spots were also drinking and partying spots, and at the swimming holes a lot of people took off their outer clothes, losing change as they did. And going back even earlier in the years, folks would take their clothes to the riverbanks to wash them in the water. The same goes for old farm ponds, many were used as a favorite summer time swimming spot or picnic area. The banks and shores of rivers, ponds, streams, lakes etc, are great locations for coins, jewelry, trinkets and more.

Schools – Churches: These are also ‘HOT’ areas for metal detecting, most towns or even rural areas have a school, some have multiple ones. Schools that are currently open during school season are a great place to find modern coins and even a few clad coins, also numerous trinkets, diecast cars, and cheaper jewelry items can easily be found on modern school grounds.

If you are as lucky as I am, then you live in a rural or country area that keeps a lot of their old buildings. I know where there are two old buildings that served as one room school houses, these places were open in the late 1800’s to the early 1940’s. Just imagine the wonderful finds these old grounds may be hiding. The old one room school houses also served as churches, social halls, farm grange buildings, and as meeting places for scouts, ladies aid societys and more.

Many old Churches and one room school houses had there own treasure chests, that’s right. When these buildings were constructed, the local kids and adults would bury a chest on the grounds or under a corner stone of the building. The chest was a sort of time capsule containing coins, newspapers and other unique items from the time when the building was erected. Many of these old buildings rotted away over time, and folks forgot about the buried time capsule located near the corner stone.

Searching the land a church is on is like searching for a pirates loot, you never know what you may find. And a lot of churches are very old, even many of the modern ones are like schools, they are built on the grounds where old ones stood. Churches were often the first buildings built in many towns. Right here where I live are numerous churches, and one was built in the early 1700’s. Church buildings not only housed people on sundays but, most were wedding sites, reception halls, dance halls, dinner sites, ice cream social locations, group meeting spots and much more.

Woods – The woods can be awesome for metal detecting if one knows what to look for. Look for old paths, those are great places to detect along. Old paths in the woods served as shortcuts to open fields for farmers to get their equipment through, or for cattle to follow and more. In a wooded area not far from where I grew up as a child I know where there is an old path, now grown up with trees and bushes, most folks would overlook it or not know it’s history. My grandfather and dad built the road by blasting stumps with dynamite and by hand cutting trees. They used the path to quickly get tractors, and other farm machinery to another open field below the woods. Just imagine the number of times my own dad and grandfather probably sat along that old road, eating their lunch or sipping some cool lemonaid underneath the shade of a large tree. Any time someone sat along a road eating lunch, they would often pull an old cloth hanky from their pocket to blow their nose or even wipe their mouth, often losing some pocket change at the same time.

Another rare but great metal detecting site that can often be found in the woods is old stone foundations and old stone chimneys, each has the potential for a rare gold coin or a jar of old silver dollars. Remember at one time this old stone foundation or fireplace was part of a familys home, with kids playing, parties and numerous outdoor activites.

Some other great Metal Detecting sites are – Parks, Beaches, Old Ball Fields, Playgrounds, Fairgrounds, Camping Sites, Camps, Ghost Towns, Battlefields, Old Picnic Spots. Make sure that you have permission to search and dig in any location you are going to do your detecting at.

There is Computer Software that is made just for the hobby of Metal Detecting. The software is called: ‘Metal Detector – Treasure Hunter Professional’, and may be seen at this website address:

Helpful Tips to Treasure Hunting With Metal Detectors
By Daniel Chiapperino

Whether you are a novice or experienced treasure hunter nothing is more important than that one great find of the day, but many treasure hunters miss that great find by not digging everything, or by being asked to leave a site, right before digging that last ping, because they didn’t ask permission to hunt there, well here are some ideas and tips to help you get “your” great find.

1. Can I hunt here?

First and foremost, always get permission to hunt a site, even when it is a public place like a beach or park, one way I have gotten permission for these types of places is to offer a free service, for instance, ask the caretaker if they would like you to remove all the sharp metal objects buried in the sand, like flip tops, and crushed cans, provided you can keep or properly dispose of what is found, they are more likely to allow you access if they get something useful out of it, like having their beach cleaned and unsafe items removed, and feel free to show them what hazards you have removed from their patrons harm, so they will allow you to return often, of course you don’t show the coins, jewelry, or valuables you also sifted out of the sand.

2. Bad times = good times for you!

Although where to hunt is important , it’s also “when” you hunt some places that makes the most difference. When hunting beaches almost anytime is OK but how much better would your hit rate be if you went after a very hot and busy beach day? well you might think that improves your chances of finding some valuables, and it does, but what would be better is take the same scenario as before, but add the element of a mid-day, or late afternoon, thunderstorm that came with out warning, now you are adding the fact that many beach goers, caught unaware of the impending storm until the first cloudburst, are now all racing around to collect their belongings and trying to get out of the deluge, in this instance many people will find they have lost something valuable, and just a note on jewelry, anything found with engravings or inscriptions, you should always try to locate the original owner if possible, most times a reward will be offered, and you will make someone’s day great. Another great time to go to beaches or around lakes is after a huge storm, where erosion has occurred, inland lakes only require heavy downpours or snowmelt to expose items previously buried too deep to find, but on the shore hurricanes, and nor’easters are best for exposing much older, deeper items missed in the past, sometimes including gold coins from ancient shipwrecks. If you live near a northern shore where large amounts of snow accumulates over the winter, the first spring snowmelt is also likely to erode enough beach to expose older buried treasures previously missed by other detectorists.

3. History lessons!

Research your areas history. In my town we have a building that is host to housing a middle aged couple who also have the small luncheonette run by them on the ground floor, and engraved in the wooden columns is a date: built 1786, so while waiting for my sandwich I asked what this place was originally, and was told it was a stage-coach stop, so I proceeded to ask if they also owned the dirt parking area across the street, and they told me no one knows if anyone owns it, I told her why I asked, and she offered to allow me to not only search the public area across the street, but if I let her know when I am there I can search all the property around the building their family has owned for generations. Many area’s local historical societies can provide guidance as to what area’s were first developed and which roads or sites still exist today, and will offer locally written books about the settlement and development of the area, many of which will include a large old building which was a hostel/bordello in it’s day, which means allot of traffic in one place for many people to lose their belongings, even something as seemingly insignificant as a metal button can bring in a high cash value if it is old but identifiable, people have found very old coins and jewelry as well, when I picked out a silver medal of “Mary” I didn’t think much of it, it was all black and crusty, but later when going through my findings I picked it out and carefully cleaned it to reveal the rock she is standing on has the date 1839, and was found on the grounds of a building that was built in 1886, along with a few coins from the early 1800’s, by the way the building was also a bordello during the first world war, it is located near naval docks!

4. Tools of the trade!

Ok you found a good spot to hunt and got permission, you have a metal detector, what else do you need? Well for beach hunting as well as other types of hunting you will need to start with at least two zippered or Velcro pouches, like a belly bag, or you can use a builder’s pocketed apron, one will be used to hold your good or questionable findings, the other you will use for obvious trash dug up, when beach hunting you will need a sand scoop, preferably with a wire mesh basket, wire mesh scoops tend to be lighter than perforated stainless steel baskets, you want the holes small enough to prevent a half dime from slipping through, if they are bigger you might miss out on small rings as well, for other types of treasure hunting you will need a sharp serrated digging tool, many of which look like a hunting knife, but if the blade is shaped like a trowel shovel it will be easier to dig through hard rocky, packed dirt, especially if there are dense tree or shrubbery roots to cut through to get down to your prize, in this case a long metal probe is useful for narrowing down where to dig, by inserting it around the area where you got your ping, you can tell whether it is buried deep or shallow, and with numerous probings you can determine the general shape of the object before digging it out of the dirt. Always wear leather gloves when digging to protect your hands from glass, sharp metal objects, or sharp stones.

Happy Hunting To All!

Some Tips on How to Find Lost Treasure With a Metal Detector
By J C Christian

If you happen to be one of those lucky people who lives either near the ocean or a large body of water the chances are that you could go searching for lost treasure in the sand with a metal detector. Beachcombing is particular popular with treasure hunters because of the sands grain makeup makes it easy to dig up and find those missing treasures and valuables. During this article we will provide tips on how to find the most treasure and valuables while out metal detecting in the sand.

Unfortunately, every beach will be different and you will need to check whether they have ordinances which will allow you to carry out metal detection on them or not. It is important that you check these ordinances in order to make sure that you can metal detect on a particular beach. You may find that there are only specific times during the day when you are actually allowed to do any type of metal detecting on the beach. However, if you can do it any time the best time to begin is early in the morning (before any body arrives) or in the evening after everybody has left. Going beach combing at these times will give you the best chance of finding the most treasure.

Why not carry out a search close to where people are walking from their cars to the water or the beach leading up to the ocean. This is an area that is often overlooked by beachcombers and is typically chock full of finds as a lot of people have their hands full or completely unaware of what they have dropped into the sand.

Also when looking for a metal detector to use for beachcombing there are a couple of things which you will need to consider to ensure that you get the best one for your money.

1. Find a metal detector that fits within your budget but at the same time provides you with a quality system so that you do not end up wasting your time while out metal detecting.

2. If you happen to know what type of environment it is you will be doing your metal detecting in then you may well want to consider some of the features of different individual metal detectors.

3. It is important that you take into consideration the company from whom you will be purchasing your metal detector. Look at what type of warranty they provide as well as their reputation in regard to customer service. Also it is important that you know if any thing goes wrong with the metal detector they will stand up to their promise with regard to repairing, replacing or exchanging the machine.

Metal detecting can be great fun on a beach and may provide you with a lot of results and hopefully the tips on finding treasure will help you to achieve this.

But the most surprising thing about Bounty Hunter products is that they remain affordable even though they are equipped with the sophisticated parts and incorporates the latest technology in metal detection.
